“We’re Nothing At All” SideBySide Charity Movie Screening and Post-Screening Sharing Session Successfully Concludes

2026.6.8

SideBySide organised the “We’re Nothing At All” Charity Movie Screening and Post-Screening Sharing on 6 June, combining the film’s hidden social messages with SideBySide’s mission to promote the concept of “Everyone deserves to belong”. The event called on the public to pay greater attention to marginalised communities and reduce labelling behaviours. The event attracted more than 240 generous supporters. The funds raised will be used to support SideBySide’s projects, including crime prevention education, health education services, and peer support programmes.

Director and screenwriter Herman Yau said during the post‑screening sharing that the film's title We’re Not At All deliberately leaves room for multiple interpretations: "Many times we rush to define what a person is, but people are actually very complex." He pointed out that compared to simply slapping on a label, understanding someone through what they are not comes closer to the truth and better reflects the facets of human nature that are hard to simplify. To truly understand each person, we should not limit ourselves to their behaviour or background, but look at the many untold stories behind them.

Actor Patrick Tam shared that the conflicts and extreme behaviour of characters in the film often do not originate from a single incident, but from the accumulation of small pressures over a long period in daily life: "Many seemingly trivial things can slowly accumulate and affect a person." He also noted that a person's "echo chamber" has a profound influence on behaviour, and he hopes audiences will show more understanding and tolerance towards those around them, reducing prejudice and opposition.

ANSONBEAN, who took part in a socially‑themed film for the first time, spoke about his character Ike. He said that living in an environment where he is not understood or accepted for a long time gradually shapes a repressed and avoidant personality: "Sometimes it's not that you don't want to change, it's that you never take the first step." Through his performance, he hopes to convey the message that "no one is alone", encouraging those in difficult situations to rise again.

SideBySide Executive Committee Chairperson the Hon. Mr. Justice POON Siu-tung pointed out that in the judicial system, a judge does not judge a person's worth but deals with their conduct, while also needing to understand their background and circumstances: "Listening and respect are indispensable parts." Labelling and exclusion have far‑reaching effects on marginalised communities. Only when society takes concrete action – providing equal employment opportunities, mental health resources and community support – can these individuals truly find their place. He called on all sectors of society to start from respect, reduce labelling, and foster "Everyone Deserves To Belong".

Through this charity movie screening, SideBySide hopes to awaken public empathy for those who are not accepted or are overlooked by society, to correctly understand the social factors behind crime and mental health issues, and to support SideBySide’s services through concrete actions, working together to build a more inclusive and safer society.
